RJ Murphy Return to Flight Scholarship Opportunity
Who was RJ Murphy?
Alaskan pilot from Aniak and Chuathbaluk.
He earned his Private Pilot Certificate at 17. He went on to earn his Instrument Rating shortly after graduating from high school.
RJ demonstrated an early commitment to aviation, he knew at the age of 15 he would be a pilot and started taking aviation classes to achieve his goals.
He was a natural aviator, a skilled stick with an instinctive feel for flying. Aviation brought him some of the greatest joy of his life and gave him some of his proudest accomplishments. Being a pilot was more than a certificate or a career path; it represented freedom, confidence, purpose, and possibility.
The RJ Murphy Return to Flight Scholarship was established in his memory to help other pilots overcome the financial barriers that can come with regaining an FAA medical certificate after losing it.
We know RJ would want others to keep going, to keep pursuing the same freedom, purpose, and opportunity that being a pilot represented to him.
Who qualifies for this scholarship opportunity?
This scholarship is open to pilots who are working to regain an FAA medical certificate and who are facing financial barriers related to that process. Must be an Alaskan resident, preference given to past students who have participated in Paneok or affiliated programs but not a requirement to apply.
Paneok Scholarships
Paneok Scholarships are designed to provide more than financial assistance. Scholarship opportunities will vary as funding and partnerships become available and may support different stages of an aviation journey, from initial training to advanced certificates, ratings, and other career-related needs.
What makes Paneok Scholarships different is the support and accountability that come with them. Each recipient agrees to be paired with a mentor and connect at least once a week to discuss progress, ask questions, and work through challenges. Recipients are also expected to give back by volunteering with an organization of their choice.
Paneok tracks scholarship funding, progress toward individual goals, and whether additional support may be needed along the way. Our goal is not simply to award a scholarship, but to stay connected, help recipients succeed, and build a stronger community of future aviation professionals.
